What Makes ‘Unboxing’ Videos So Popular?

After watching a news report on the popularity of unboxing videos, we’ve been wondering how popular they are at eden? According to Google – it would take a person over 7 years consecutively to watch all youtube videos under the heading “unboxing”. The unboxing channel ‘DisneyCollectorsBR’, is the 8th most viewed channel on YouTube making over £3.5million in just a year, by unboxing toys. Most people watch unboxing videos, mainly to decide on wether they should buy a specific item or not. Some children like the element of surprise when the product is coming out of the package, while others just binge watch. In 2015 the U.S have watched over 60 million hours of unboxing videos but how has this craze hit Eden?

We showed a few students, unboxing videos based on what they’re interested in – and these were their responses. “I didn’t mind watching the video but I couldn’t see myself watching it again” quoted by Hafsa Moutaabide year 7. Aneesah Sandford, Year 8 said “In true honesty, I didn’t know how addictive it could be”. Lastly we interviewed Faisa Abdulle, Year 9 and her response was “I thought I was overaged, and I didn’t expect myself to enjoy it as much as I did”. Most of us at eden watch the unboxing of toys, makeup, clothes, merchandise and more. Together as Eden, we give unboxing videos an overall rating of 6 out of 10.

So – it seems like unboxing videos have started to take over Eden. We’ve had selfie sticks, we’ve had Segways and now we have unboxing videos. Who knows what 2016 will bring?
