Mir Sultan Khan was born in Haripur in North-Western Pakistan. He served as a Havildar (Sergeant) in the 2nd Battalion of the First Punjab Regiment – a light infantry battalion. While fighting in Burma he was captured by Japanese forces and held in a Prisoner of War camp until 1945. He was awarded two medals for his service.

His grandson Muhammad Tanveer says that his grandfather’s service is important to him, making him feel proud and more connected to this country’s history. He told the students interviewing him that his grandfather’s service influenced his own decision to pursue a career today in the British army as a cadet instructor.
